Hello,
I will be starting my 8-year-old TB gelding on OCD Pellets soon. I already have him on a trace mineral supplement (Power Horse). Since the OCD Pellets contain only sulfur, copper, manganese, boron, and aluminum, should I continue feeding Power Horse or is there no need for it anymore? I don’t want to overdose or provide an incorrect ratio of nutrients to my horse.
Thanks!
Ania
Ania,
Very good question. However, the trace mineral complexes within the OCD Pellets are specifically for bone matrix and will not interfere with your other trace minerals. I would suggest however, that you feed your trace minerals as a free-choice supplement rather than mixing them in the sweet feed. Horses are very smart when it comes to nutrition, and they will only take in what they need – unless it is mixed in their sweet feed. By mixing it in their feed, we are not giving them a choice and perhaps could be upsetting the ratios. After being introduced to the OCD Pellets for a week or so, horses will eat the Pellets right out of your hand as they know their bones need the trace mineral complexes contained within the Pellets. If our horses were given free range and the trace minerals required for the formation of a strong bone matrix were not leached out of the soils, then we would not need to feed them the complexes contained in the OCD Pellets. Horses on free range are able to travel many miles to eat grasses/plants from specific areas that contain the trace minerals they require. Our horses are not generally able to roam as they have small pastures, and therefore we must help with their nutrition.
Thank you for your interest in OCD Pellets. Have a great day!!
Respectfully,
